Puppy Sleeping Routine: The Dos and Don’ts

Having a new puppy is an incredibly exciting time, but it’s important to establish a proper sleeping routine right from the start. A good sleep schedule is crucial for your puppy’s health and well-being while also ensuring they feel safe and secure in their new home. In this blog, we will discuss the dos and don’ts of establishing a puppy sleeping routine.

Dos:

1. Create a cozy sleeping space: Designate a specific, comfortable area for your puppy to sleep. This can be a crate, a soft bed, or a quiet corner with a blanket. Ensure that the area is warm, quiet, and away from any distractions that may disrupt their sleep.

2. Stick to a consistent bedtime: Dogs are creatures of habit, so it’s important to establish a consistent bedtime routine. Set a regular time for your puppy to go to sleep each night, and try to stick to it as closely as possible. Consistency will help them understand when it’s time to wind down and rest.

3. Gradually crate train if desired: Crate training can be an effective way to establish a safe space for your puppy to sleep. If you choose to crate train, introduce the crate gradually using positive reinforcement. Make it a pleasant experience by placing soft bedding and a few toys inside. Slowly increase the amount of time your puppy spends in the crate until they are comfortable and secure.

4. Incorporate exercise: Just like humans, puppies need exercise to expend energy and promote a good night’s sleep. Engage in regular playtime or short walks during the day to tire them out. Avoid vigorous exercise too close to bedtime, as it may rev them up rather than calm them down.

5. Establish a bedtime routine: A consistent routine leading up to bedtime will signal to your puppy that it’s time to sleep. Activities such as a peaceful walk, a small meal, or calming playtime can become part of the routine. Be sure to include a bathroom break shortly before bedtime to avoid accidents during the night.

Don’ts:

1. Let them sleep wherever they like: While it may be tempting to allow your puppy to sleep on your bed or any comfortable furniture, it’s best to establish boundaries from the beginning. Letting them sleep wherever they please can create confusion and the potential for problems down the road. Encourage them to sleep in their designated area.

2. Leave them alone for long periods: Puppies are social creatures and thrive on companionship. Avoid leaving them alone for extended periods, especially during the early stages of crate training. Gradually increase the duration of alone time so they learn to feel secure in their own space.

3. Encourage late-night play: While it’s important to provide mental and physical stimulation for your puppy, avoid stimulating play leading up to bedtime. Excitement and play can make it difficult for them to calm down and settle for sleep. Instead, dedicate more active playtime to earlier in the day.

4. Use punishment for nighttime accidents: Puppies have small bladders and may have accidents during the night. If this occurs, never punish them. Punishment can make them associate the sleeping area with negative experiences, leading to further difficulties with house training.

5. Give in to whining or barking: It’s natural for puppies to whine or bark initially when left alone or when adjusting to their sleeping routine. While it may be difficult, it’s essential not to give in to their demands and provide attention during these moments. Giving in will reinforce the behavior and make it harder for them to adjust to sleeping independently.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can establish a healthy and effective sleeping routine for your new puppy. Remember, patience and consistency are key. Your puppy will learn to feel secure, comfortable, and enjoy a good night’s sleep, which is essential for their growth and overall well-being.
